Emergency recovery in Torbay

People in Torbay are being encouraged to stay safe and stay away from exposed sea front locations, because spring tides and a possible storm surge could cause more high water levels and over topping. This could cause additional flooding which has already affected Torre Abbey, Youngs Park, Goodrington South and Torbay Park. The seafront roads are likely to be closed as a precaution.

The flooding has already caused damage to footpaths and street furniture, and Torbay’s sea defences have taken a battering. Inspections will take place to assess the damage as soon as it is safe to do so. In the meantime, people are being advised to avoid these areas.

Torbay Council continues to operate in an emergency mode to deal with issues caused by the exceptional weather conditions. Resources will be deployed to start the clear-up in the recovery phase once it is safe enough to do so and when it can free up limited staffing resources. This could take several days and fixing any damage will take much longer.

Waste collections will resume as soon as possible, but residents are being advised that there will be a delay in returning to normal service collections. The Household Waste Recycling Centre will remain closed until Monday.
