Pavilion Planning Application

As previously mentioned, a Planning Application has been submitted by the Nicholas James Group for redeveloping the Marina Car Park and Pavilion.

The proposed development envisages creating a new 60 bed hotel with shops, restaurants, cafes, 45 apartments and public realm works. There are a number of strong views around this development, not least the future of Cary Green.

A three week public consultation is due to be held and a future update will include details.  The application is still being validated by the Council’s Planning Officers and the consultation will only start once this process is completed.

Call For Dementia Friends

Torbay’s Public Health Team is supporting Public Health England (PHE) and the Alzheimer’s Society (AS) with the Dementia Friends Campaign that launched this week.

PHE and AS have come together to inspire the Dementia Friends Campaign, which is encouraging people in Torbay to become a Dementia Friend by watching an interactive video online to help increase understanding.

There are currently 665,065 people in England who have dementia and an estimated 21 million people in England have a close friend or family member with dementia.  In Torbay alone, 0.9 per cent of people registered with a GP practice were diagnosed with dementia last year.

One in three over the ages of 65 will develop dementia, which is an incredibly high statistic. People with dementia can live well, and Torbay’s, Norman McNamara, has written a song which is competing to be the theme tune for this Summer’s Fringe Festival. You can find out more about that by clicking here.

The campaign aims to create a network of one million Dementia Friends across England by 2015. For further information on the campaign and how to become a Dementia Friend, please visit www.dementiafriends.org.uk

Could You Foster For Torbay?

On Monday Torbay Council will be launching its latest foster care recruitment campaign at the English Riviera Wheel at Princess Gardens, Torquay during foster care fortnight, which runs from Monday 12 until Sunday 25 May.

The focus this year is on getting more people to think about fostering teenagers who need support at a crucial stage in their life. By being placed with the right foster carers, teenagers have the opportunity to continue with their education and have the stability to thrive with a family that can give them the love and support they need.

Torbay Council’s Foster Care Team welcomes enquiries from a wide range of applicants to reflect the diverse needs of children in Torbay. If you feel you could provide a home for one of the many children needing foster parents just click here for more information

The Bay’s Public Health Team Wants Your Views

Torbay’s Public Health Team is asking local residents to have their say and help shape future lifestyle services to meet today’s challenging demands.

They are seeking to consult with residents to ensure that their opinions and views are listened to. They want to ensure that the services are tailored to suit individuals’ needs.

The key lifestyles services provided by the Public Health Team include:
–              Helping people to stop smoking.
–              Improving diet and increasing physical activity
–              Drinking alcohol within recommended limits
–              Improving mental, self-esteem and well being.

Smoking is still the single largest cause of preventable death in England. In the South West, seven people die from smoking related illnesses every day according to figures from the South West Public Health Observatory 2008. Figures produced by Cancer Research UK show that every year 460 children take up the smoking habit across the bay.

Obesity is one of the UK’s biggest public health issues, with the number of adults and children increasing dramatically. Worryingly Torbay has higher rates for adult obesity compared to the national picture. Obesity is associated with a range of health problems including type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Giving your views is easy, just go to www.torbay.gov.uk/lifestylessurvey and complete the survey. You could also win a twilight treat spa package and dinner for two at TLH’s Aztec Spa and Bistro.  The survey closes Wednesday 11 June 2014.
